Long March
Season 3, Episode 2

The episode begins with the interior of a Chinese Thunderbird vehicle, red tactical lighting illuminating the faces of 9 nervous Chinese soldiers. Gum is passed around, but even the soldiers intent masticating does nothing to break the stress. One of the soldier peers at a video on his wrist display, the Popeye (aka Something new) is on it. Both of them comment that this is not a regular mission, as they glance over at the shaman,, wearing both fatigues and several animal bone necklaces.

Phoenix 1, 2, and 3 close in, three Chinese Military Thunderbirds assigned to anti-piracy missions. They are outside of their jurisdiction, in international waters, yet still closing in on this strange vessel. Upon RADAR signal, the three Thunderbirds pull out to maximum weapon’s range and their crews, squads of 6 soldiers, tumble out of each vehicle. Their Sparrow hover-packs allow them to approach with more stealth.

The squadron’s data flashes across Nairts readouts and he relays this information to the team. Ay and Callie take up good sniping positions as Connor heads towards the Black Betty, asking Nairt’s permission along the way. Salo casually dons sunglasses and pulls a deckchair underneath the cover of a steel staircase. He logs onto the Matrix. Mal hops into a secure closet and leaps into the Astral plane.

Ay and Callie take pot shots, downing almost half of the approaching squad. Salo starts hacking the closed nodes on each of the Chinese Thunderbirds. Mal assenses and sees a hawk-like spirit circling her and the vessel. Connor, in control of The Betty also takes out a couple of the approaching soldiers. Some of them are skimming the surface of the water, apparently laden with explosives. The other are flying at deck level.

Mal senses another stronger magical power out by the Chinese Thunderbirds and she throws up a mana barrier. She sees that this force is sending a spirit towards her, full of flames. The hawk spirit still watches, circling.

Ay and Callie take out most of the approaching team, however 4 of them make it onto deck and 3 make it onto the side of the hull near the water. Ay kills one of the soldiers on the hull before he switches to his pistols. The soldier dangles lifeless, held aloft by his mag-clamp.

Callie peppers two of the soldiers with bullets, killing one, as the other (obviously equipped with cyber reflexes) escapes and climbs up by the bridge.

Salo, after several seconds of effort, hacks into the node of Phoenix 1. He shuts down the Thunderbird’s controls, sending the vehicle into the drink.

One of the invading soldiers heads into the bowels of the ship, Ay follow, pistols out.

The two Chinese demolitions experts, magnetically clinging to the side of the ship, place their plastic explosive charges, attempting to shape them to damage such a well-armored ship. Connor in Better and Nairt, using Bam-A-Lam take up threatening positions, buffeting the soldiers with exhaust and light.

Just as the soldiers believe they have an advantage to leverage, Salo explodes their detonator charges in their packs, leaving the last demolitions crew without effective measures. Connor begins hailing the Chinese ships, telling them to stand down.

Ay bursts in on the one soldier that made it into the belly of the vessel. He badly wounds his leg and the soldier was planning to set up a charge of grenades. The situation quickly develops into a standoff, with Ay armed and the soldier having his explosive pack, although his leg is badly wounded.

Callie takes out the soldier facing her and then turns to the one behind her. The lieutenant with the cyber reflexes has disappeared as Callie stares down the soldier behind her.

The shaman on Phoenix 2 tries to breach the mana barrier that Mal put up. He cannot get through it and briefly stuns himself in the process.

The Chinese team is badly decimated, and ineffective at this point, except for the lieutenant, who has stationed himself just outside the pilot cocoon. Negotiations ensue. The Shaman on Phoenix 2 attempts to bargain to allow the ships to leave. The demolitions soldiers drop off and begin jetting back to the Thunderbirds. The soldier that Callie is facing down also jumps overboard. Ay convinces the soldier in the cafeteria to abandon his grenade bomb and captures him. Ay takes him down to the Doc-Bay for treatment.

After negotiating, all of the Chinese are willing to pull out except for the lieutenant, who is flanked by a stealthy Callie and Ay. It becomes clear that the party has the upper-hand and the Chinese reveal that they were searching for a vessel with a dragon in the cargo hold. This vessel is actually much further North, almost to the Arctic Circle, and most likely containing the Blue Dragon. Video is shown of a similarly, if not more spectacularly, dismal performance of the Chinese Military against that vessel, flying Australian lags and with Wheatgerm Corp ownership papers..

Mal’s mana barrier successfully resisted the Chinese military shaman and she stunbolts the Hawk watcher spirit out of the plane. The hawk disappears when hit. Convinces everything is safe, she reverts back into the real world.

Salo begins recruiting the Chinese soldier in the med-bay to join into a game-world wedding which Salo has code-named Wang-narok. The Chinese soldier is to be part of the wedding party. The end result sounds both messy and bloody, in virtual game terms.

Salo also has control of Phoenix 2, and is scaring the Hell out of its crew by flipping it and nearly crashing it.

Tense negotiations ensue. Finally the Chinese cut their silence and ask for retreat. The group allows them to pick up.

Finally a call comes in from Connor’s mother. Mentioning that she and Bruno are in a panic room. Bruno is injured and they are surrounded by heavily-armed Chinese gangs, who have explosives and apparently know how to use them. Time is running out and Bruno and Connor’s mom are in a bad place. Callie tells Bruno to never give the mother over.

Fatback calls Salo via several hops and take responsibility for the gangs around Connor’s Mom. He and Salo get into a huge battle of wits, Fatback records some of Salo’s less-sympathetic quotes and sends them to Connor. The end situation is that Connor’s mom is still being held captive by Fatback and his gang members. Bruno says they can hold out a week.

The team decides to send a contingent to save Connor’s mom. End of episode.

Hurry Up, We're Dreaming
Season 3, Episode 1

New theme song – Midnight Cityby M83.

New Credits sequence described (see separate document)

Episode begins in the astral plane as seen by Malenkka. Fawkes & Kirsten the Cat entertain Mal at a picnic with tea and crumpets. Fawkes wants Mal to see a show the dragons are about to put on. Kirsten wants to give Mal two gifts. She summons a spirit who is a ghost from the Northern Tribes of the world of Atavar (within the Five Shards game). This ghost’s beard rings are transformed into silver & diamond battle axe cuff links that Mal is instructed to give to Salo, Mal is also given a rabbit’s foot fetish with which she is told she can call to Kirsten for help. Kirsten makes several oblique references to an upcoming event in the North.

The dragon’s activity is shown to Mal. 13 days prior the three freed dragons are in the Rajateria in London, UK. Cirrushorn, the white dragon, appears to really have a hankering for Indian food. However, they are soon attacked by a Smiley-drone and a fire elemental, which they subdue and then Cir suggests that they build a Fortress of Solitude at the North Pole to avoid human contacts, since someone is obviously out to get them. They fly off in that direction, their claws full of Indian food.

Mal startles everyone, awaking from her dream crying “Fortress of Solitude”. Callie was just heating up some Indian leftovers and the Microwave chime coincided with Mal’s awakening. Salo is deeply immersed in the online world, as is Rosie, however Rosie rouses himself to get some of the heated Indian food.

Mal attempts to get everyone’s attention, however this requires tapping on Salo’s VR goggles. We flash into Salo’s world, as he brings about the triumph that is Dongpocalypse, scoring yet another legendary victory for the Bastard Squad guild. (See Salo’s document for full description of this Epicness). Darren Trilby is introduced as a nemesis, head designer at Homophone Software, game designers.

Mal gives Salo his cuff links and Salo, Rosie, Mal and Callie discuss some aspects of Dongpocalypse. Salo receives two calls in quick succession. First from Cheese, who commends the Guildmaster of Bastard Squad on Dongpocalypse and then also lets him know that Liebnitz will now be attending a conference in Beijing in 7 days to discuss Shard and its impact on society. This was a reschedule after the events at NIH caused a security reassessment.

Next Shining Rainbow calls Salo. Shining an eco-shaman of sorts, still involved in The Eventide, asks Salo if he’s going to the big event, Freezing Man to be held up at the North Pole. This was thrown together after a mysterious cold snap suddenly returned to that area of the globe after decades of temperate weather. She chides Salo to use yoga to maintain good posture as Salo blatantly ignores this advices. Salo and Shining come to a tentative agreement to see each other at Freezing Man.

Rosie idly asks Callie about Lotho’s health, which has been extremely slow to recover. Callie doesn’t seem too worried about it. The Indian food is slightly old but yummy.

Ay lies in his bunk, sullenly bouncing an old racquetball off the ceiling and wall of the below-decks bunkroom. Connor keeps in company. Their reverie is interrupted by a horrible-looking Lotho who has dragged himself down to their room from the Auto-Doc bay. Lotho describes some dreams before falling unconscious.

Connor and Ay return Lotho to the Auto-Doc and Mal joins them when she hears Lotho is unwell. Astrally, Lotho and especially his prosthetic arm are giving off significant magical signatures. Back in the chair, Lotho is sedated but his brain activity is very high even when unconscious and his face looks strained. Ay discovers that Lotho has a disused crystal jack in the back of his skull too.

Connor messes around with Lotho’s mechanical arm and discovers a serial number that Nairt is able to tell belongs to Liebnitz from 10 years ago. Mal looks at the arm astrally and pokes it, causing some kind of warning spirit to keen an alarm based on the wrist of the arm in astral space.

Nairt receives an encrypted message from the UK, postdated by two weeks saying to look for a message in a bottle. At nearly the same time, the group downstairs hears the sounds of bottles hitting the Popeye. The ship is surrounded by the bottles. Each bottle contains a message with an ad for Freezing Man and a handwritten message from the three dragons on the back saying that they need help and are trying to avoid human contact, but this festival is going to cause problems.

Disgusted at not receiving the memories promised him by the green dragon, Ay kicks several bottles back into the sea, and he heads back down to his bunk to throw his racquetball.

A search by Mal and Nairt reveal that Wheatgerm Corp is a big backer (and perhaps instigator) of the Freezing Man gathering. Mal hears about a new soy pop beverage and Nairt finds video footage indicating that the blue dragon might be on the massive cargo ship headed to the North Pole from Australia, the base of Wheatgerm.

Salo gives Callie a detailed slideshow on the many crimes of Darren Trilby. Callie notes how many naked women Salo has in his “research”.

Connor decides to remove Lotho’s arm to research it further and recover a screw from it. He notices that Lotho’s arm “socket” is the same as everyone’s crystal skull-socket. Eventually, Ay decides to use his datajack to jack into Lotho’s arm. He’s instantly playing the 5 Shards game, as a full on 20th level Ayundil.

When he comes back he’s soon seen by Connor and Mal to bleed from the nose. Suddenly Ay falls into a wracking seizure. His memories are flooding back to him, his life as a yakuza. Connor and Lotho get Ay into the Auto-Doc seat. When he awakens, Ay is a pained but changed man. Connor is none the worse for wear, having sustained a thrashing from the unconscious Ay.

Darren Trilby is noted to be appearing at Frozen Man, as is the mystery assassin who attacked Callie a couple of episodes back.

As Connor starts a philosophical discussion on the perception of reality and parallel dimensions, Niart notices that 3 Thunderbird ships with Chinese government markings are closing in on the Popeye. Mal notes that these folks also have spirits and potentially shamans with them.

A final cutscene shows Connor’s mother in Long Beach, hiding with the Russian mafia, especially Boris. Boris reveals dealings with some Chinese gangsters when gunfire erupts. Connor’s mother moves to hide in the “safe room” that Boris pointed out.

End of Episode 1.

Welcome to your campaign!
A blog for your campaign

Wondering how to get started? Here are a few tips:

1. Invite your players

Invite them with either their email address or their Obsidian Portal username.

2. Edit your home page

Make a few changes to the home page and give people an idea of what your campaign is about. That will let people know you’re serious and not just playing with the system.

3. Choose a theme

If you want to set a specific mood for your campaign, we have several backgrounds to choose from. Accentuate it by creating a top banner image.

4. Create some NPCs

Characters form the core of every campaign, so take a few minutes to list out the major NPCs in your campaign.

A quick tip: The “+” icon in the top right of every section is how to add a new item, whether it’s a new character or adventure log post, or anything else.

5. Write your first Adventure Log post

The adventure log is where you list the sessions and adventures your party has been on, but for now, we suggest doing a very light “story so far” post. Just give a brief overview of what the party has done up to this point. After each future session, create a new post detailing that night’s adventures.

One final tip: Don’t stress about making your Obsidian Portal campaign look perfect. Instead, just make it work for you and your group. If everyone is having fun, then you’re using Obsidian Portal exactly as it was designed, even if your adventure log isn’t always up to date or your characters don’t all have portrait pictures.

That’s it! The rest is up to your and your players.
